Layering Guide

Layered necklaces look most balanced when each chain has its own visual space. Start with different lengths, then account for pendant size, chain thickness, and neckline.

Start with 2-inch spacing

A simple starting point is to separate neighboring chains by about 2 inches. For example, pair 16 and 18 inches, or 18 and 20 inches. This creates visible separation without making the layers feel disconnected.

Classic two-layer combinations

• 16 + 18 inches: compact and polished; good for a delicate chain with a small pendant.
• 18 + 20 inches: easy everyday layering with slightly more drop.
• 16 + 20 inches: stronger separation when both pieces have pendants.

Three-layer combinations

A common starting point is 16 + 18 + 20 inches. If the pendants are larger, increase the spacing so they do not overlap or tangle visually.

Balance pendant size

Place smaller or lighter pendants higher and larger pendants lower. This keeps the stack visually balanced and reduces competition between focal points.

Mix chain textures carefully

Combining different chain textures can add dimension, but avoid making every layer equally bold. One stronger chain with finer supporting chains usually feels cleaner.

Consider your neckline

Open necklines give short and mid-length chains more room, while higher necklines often work better with longer layers that sit over the fabric.

Reduce tangling

• Use different chain lengths rather than stacking identical lengths.
• Keep very similar pendant sizes on separate levels.
• Mix chain weights so the chains do not settle into exactly the same path.
• Put the heavier or larger pendant on the longest layer.
